  5. Pawno (2016)

Pawno is a character driven ensemble film set in the diverse and multicultural suburb of Footscray in Melbourne, Australia. It revolves around one day in the lives of twelve characters. The film is set in an ageing Pawnbrokers and at the core of the story beats a romance, yet love is rarely simple. Within a day, lives intersect and motives are examined. It is a multi-layered story that celebrates the rawness of humanity and challenges audiences to see the world from a different view. Characters from various cultural backgrounds are reflected in the performances of some of Australia’s most dynamic actors. It is the Australia that we see when walking down the street and one rarely shown and often maligned in film. Pawno is a film that has garnered much hype amongst the film world in Australia. A brilliant soundtrack comprising Tom Waits, Astronomy Class and Vance Joy amongst others is married with an original score to take the viewer into the sanctuary of Les Underwood and his pawn store whilst catching the vulnerability of those on the street. Essentially, it is a left of centre Rom – Com, but don’t be surprised to shed a tear. Pawno is a film with a heart of gold about characters that won’t be forgotten.

How We Work

What We Are Looking For

White Hot Productions is proactive in the projects it undertakes. We pursue our own initiatives and actively seek out or commission projects for our development portfolio and production slate from either experienced or emerging writers or production teams. We have a rigorous review and assessment process.

In our projects, we look for the different, the daring and the dynamic. We appreciate and nurture clever ideas, good writing and inspiring vision which can be translated into projects which have strong audience appeal and commercial marketability.

With television series in development, we take them from the hasty scrawl of promising ideas scribbled on a napkin to thoroughly developed exciting series concepts, storylines and pitch documents. We’re strong on an Australian slant and point of view and the track record of the principals.

The Development Process

A very important part of our development process is to put together a top notch development team working together with the original creators and project principals and others who can make a major contribution to a creative development process that ensures an outstanding series.

The story must be appealing and the subject matter either hasn’t been done before or has an exciting twist on what might be a familiar theme.  We’re looking for strong characterisation, compelling story telling, good writing mixed with a strong visual sense and a deft combination of images, action and dialogue which matches its genre and fulfils its intentions.

White Hot has been able to ensure the nurturing of its development slate free of external influences and time pressures.  The direct benefit is that each project has been given the necessary time so that it is presented to the market in the best possible shape.  Deadlines are bespoke, self imposed and in the best interests of the individual project.
